Dame Emma Kirkby: Orpheus in England

Wednesday 14th September 2011 at 7:30 pm

Firmly established as one of the world's most charismatic English sopranos and highly respected early music recitalists, Dame Emma Kirkby launches our new season of concerts in exquisite style.

With a programme dedicated to exploring the beauty of anguish and lament, Emma Kirkby's dazzlingly beautiful voice is complimented by the accompaniment of lutenist, Jakob Lindberg. Featuring short songs and solo lute music by Dowland and Purcell, and in the unparalleled acoustic of the Wathen Hall, this concert promises to be a ravishing inaugural experience.

Dame Emma Kirkby (soprano)
Jakob Lindberg (lute)

Dowland:
Come heavy sleep
Shall I strive with words to move
A shepherd in a shade
By a fountain where I lay
Away with these self-loving lads
Lachrimae Earl of Essex' galliard
Come ye heavy states of night
Farewell unkind, farewell
Prelude
Fantasia
Toss not my soul
In darkness let me dwell

Purcell:
She loves and she confesses too
They tell us that you mighty pow'rs above
Sweeter than roses
What a sad fate is mine
Bess of Bedlam
Suite of dances arranged for lute
Fly swift ye hours
Music for a while
